All Quiet on the Western Front Paragraph
“They turn back and walk slowly down the canal, keeping along the towpath all the way. We accompany them swimming. After a few hundred yards they turn off and point to a house that stands a little distance away among the trees and shrubbery.
Leer asks if they live there.
They laugh—sure, that’s their house.
We call out to them that we would like to come, sometime when the guards cannot see us. At night. To-night.”
Excerpt From: Erich Maria Remarque & Arthur Wesley Wheen. “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
A little fun won't hurt anyone. In Chapter Seven of the book, All Quiet on The Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, Paul, Kropp, and Leer decide to take a little break from the madness of war, and have a little fun. The Men all gather around as they smoke, drink and have a good time. They were extremely happy because they finally got a break from the war and actually had a chance to have some fun. Paul, Leer, and Kropp meet three women while they are swimming. They communicate with them in broken French, so that the women will stay. All three men and three women, swim over to a house. They are delighted toget a break and have some fun!
Tough times make the easy times even better. When the gang goes out they do all they can do in their power to have a good time. Normally, this would seem very unimportant and pointless but to these folks its is all they could ask for in this time of unforgiving war. In this day and age we rarely come across things. That these young people have to go through. So, for us we cannot really relate but you can imagine it like this. You were on some great adventure. Everyone thought you have died after 5 years since your disappearance. Even you thought you had died. But, when you return after what you never thought you would return from it makes a simple drink taste so very much better. During the war, fun is hard to come by, but these men find a way to make it happen.
